023 - Happy Birthday to Me!

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

This week, Andrew discusses his CRAAAAZY birthday party, Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale, Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and can we talk about how little the Titans actually wear their super suits?

Dad. Why I am cast because parenting is a complihandi profession. Welcome to Episode Twenty Three of the Dad Glorian podcast. I am your host, Andrew, and, if you couldn't tell from the intro music, we're still having technical difficulties, so we were recording in the closet again. Yeah, you still trying to figure out? I love sounds Quipment, don't get me wrong, but there are days when I just want to scream. That's all there is to it. So Fun Hum. I'm trying to figure out how to eliminate said hum and I got to figure out what's going on with it to do that. So, yeah, any case, how are you? Don't how's everybody going? Um, yeah, right now. I am just coming off the weekend of my birthday. So, for those of you who are not aware, my birthday was the twenty four. I turned thirty eight this year and that's all very exciting. I did not do anything especially exciting on my birthday. We actually went to Eugene and drove my brother in law's wedding gift down to my in laws. Wean basically met halfway and handed it off. So I built a headboard for them, had a kind of a frantic week getting that all put together, but ultimately got it all done, get was done and ready and hopefully we'll get there all in one piece. I've already made the commitment that if, for whatever reason it does not get to Pennsylvania in one piece, that I will go and basically our first trip out there will wind up being me fixing it. So that is that is where I'm at ray now, just getting stuff done and the having a good time. We did get to have a good lunch at the original roadhouse grill in Eugene down there and got myself a bacon wrappeds full a Mignon, which was quite nice. Yeah, so that was that was what I did, and then we did some shopping. I got myself some new deluth trading company shorts and underpants and I'm not going to lie to you, the buck naked underwear is super comfortable. That is more than anybody ever needs to know about my underwear habits. But I only own one pair of those because they are twenty...

...bucks apiece. But I had to know if they were worth the hype, and they're worth the hype, I'm not going to lie. So yeah, that was a what I spent my weekend doing. Yeah, that's pretty much it was just a one of those weekends kind of reflecting on the fact I I realize this year that I'm twenty years out of high school. Like I got my twenty year reunion, if we do some sort of twenty year reunion. I got that notification from somebody on facebook and that was a little bit terrifying to realize I've been out of high school for two years longer than I was in higher school all together. I mean not school all together, I mean basically I've been an adult for more than half of my wife now. So that's a really weird feeling at this point in time. Just looking at it, looking at my boy is going hey, I've got one that's for already. He's going to be five, he's going to be a quarter of the time that I've been on high school this year. Yeah, not at all weird. Not at all weird. So yeah, that's what I've been up to. Yeah, hope you guys are having a great weekend. We're going to head to our first break a little bit quicker than normal, but yeah, gonna just go ahead and get to our streaming stuff because we got a lot to cover their so stay tuned back. Thanks again so much for tuning in to the dead Dolrian podcast. I would like to take a moment to thank our supporters out there, the Dad Dolrian covert particularly. That is our membership program if you want to join that, go to buy me a coffeecoma the dead Dolrian and the information is there. If you just want to donate on a onetime basis to you can do that as well. There are options for everybody, but if you are part of the dead Dolorian covert, you actually get notified the day before of what particular topics I will be covering on my episode this week as well. As there is going to be a month we meet up. We've got to have one coming up pretty soon here. I got to get that sorted out because I have been busy and have...

...not done any of the planning for it, but it is something where we are going to get that. Can hear it all figured out pretty quick here. So yeah, what we watched this week? Well, I think it goes without saying Falcon in the winter soldier, and can I just say thank you, what Knda for the gift of the Captain America uniform, my goodness, like seeing it in the comic books is one thing, and I think that goes for just about anything that happens in the marvel cinematic universe, but when you actually see that come onto the page, are not on to the page, off of the page and come onto the screen, it is incredible and they did such a phenomenal job getting all of the details on that right and just getting to see Sam in action, with him using both the wings and the shield, who amazing loved that. Also, I'm gonna go ahead and let you know the touching tribute there with Oh oh, why can't I think of his name? All of a sudden, the Black Captain America that was before Sam. The one. Is it? Isaiah Washington? I think was his name. Isaiah Bradley. Isaiah Bradley, that's what I had to think about it for a minute. Any case, Isaiah Bradley, who's basically for all intents and purposes dead like to the world, but seam making it sure that he gets a spot in the Captain America Museum exhibit so that people won't forget him. I think that was a really amazing tribute to him and that was something that I think was just really cool way to kind of address that. Also, I didn't and talk about this last week because I was in such a just rush of everything going on with the episode. Can we talk about that cameo. I mean, the thing that I always say is in you see a high level actor actress in a marvel movie or Marvel show, they don't just pull those people for just like random one off kind of...

...things. Like you look at the precedent before Ming now when being used for one episode of the Mandalorian and season one, and she was a very decent name in that that I was like really, you pulled her for just that one episode and then it turns out no, no, they've been planning ahead and she's back and she's going to be on the book of Boba Fett too. So and also being in clone wars, or not calling wars, but the bad batch. Just there's so many different things that they are using her for now. On top of that, you look at, for instance, when we saw Catherine Han get pulled in as Agnes Aka I gath a harkless in one division like that casting was one where you looked at it's like, did they really just pull her for being the nosy neighbor. I don't feel like they did that and sure enough, they didn't just pull her for the nosy neighbor. So, that being said, you had last week's episode where John Walker was in being basically stripped of his rank and title of Captain America and all of that, and he winds up going and sitting there with his wife and they're talking about things and then who walks in but Julia Louis Dreyfus as the Contessa Valentina Dea. But I've a debatadt like literally, nobody's ever going to remember that. Just callor val but don't actually do it out loud, do it in your head. Yeah, that was a huge poll and it was one of those ones where, like, the second she walked on the screen, I'm like, this is absolutely the cameo that they've been talking about and teasing that it's somebody big and I don't think that they're just pulling her for a bit part. Honestly, you guys, like I think it's something. It's got to build something bigger, whether that be thunderbolts or dark avengers, I have no idea. All I know is they pulled Julia freaking Louie Dreyfuss into the Marvel Universe and her part was, as little as we got of it, fantastic. Just she was phenomenal in her little bit that...

...she had. Her getting him set up as US agent at the end of the series was a kind of a nice touch, and him calling her val and she said don't call me that like was just I loved it. And what they were going to do with her character. I don't know. Rumor has it she was originally supposed to have been introduced way back done when they were supposed to be releasing black widow before the captain America. A Oh my gosh, my captain America. Wow. Well, they change it to Captain America and the winter soldier after the end of the season, but Falcon in the winter soldier, that was the apparently the supposed to be where she came in originally was actually going to be in black widow. So it'll be interesting. She's definitely going to be used for more than just what they used her for in this. I feel like marvel setting her up for stuff in phase. For maybe she's kind of going to be a Hark back to nick fury assembling the Avengers, only she's doing her own thing. Maybe she's the thunderbolts. I mean you've got Zemo in the raft which that was last wardened by none other than thunderbolt Ross. So maybe we'll see lots of different options that they can go with on that. And it was one of those things the character you had to Google or to find out who she was, unless you were like a super hardcore nerd like I did not know her by name and I googled her and at one point she was Madam Hydra, she was an agent of shield and also she was basically a triple agent working for Leviathan. Leviathan is a name that, if it sounds vaguely familiar to you, it was actually one of the major plot points in agent Carter, the series, where will viathan was the intelligence agency that they were going up against as the SSR back in the day, and so it was a Soviet thing. Very interesting if it is something where they wind up pulling that in, because we've had a lot of hydro we haven't heard a lot from a Leviathan since I...

...don't know agent Carter era. So if they do decide to use that that'll be cool. Then let's also talk the weightst episode of Mighty Ducks Game Changers. So in this episode Evans Dad Shows Up in Evans Dad has been not present at all in his life. Doesn't show up for anything, like he's got a lot of resentment against him from Alex because she looks at him as the reason she had to give up her career and is now a legal clerk instead of an attorney. So but he shows up and Evans like enthralled with his father, and so that's always kind of one of those things. He gets to go to his DAD's concert. She doesn't want him to go originally and because she doesn't want to have to take him coach, Bombay winds up actually volunteering to take him and spends the time with him and then they wind up getting into a wing eating match that basically winds up making Evan late to get home, and so is mom winds up coming and picking him up at midnight, super upset about it. And Yeah, it was. It was a fun little sequence. But then to have Bombay basically kind of trying to force him into being a father was also kind of a fun thing, because he gets this Gig while Gordon's hanging out with him and Gordon's like, Oh, let me drive you to the airport and then he doesn't drive him to the airport, he drives into his kids hockey game. So it was it was a really great episode. I'm really excited for next week's episode because next week we are finally getting the ducks reunion episode. I think it's called legacy of the ducks and we're going to get to see some of the original ducks and what they are up to. So it I'm super excited to see where that goes. I think. Can we take a minute to talk about the show titans. So that show. It's been interesting for me kind of going through and watching it. It's a lot about. I mean, for those of you aren't aware, it's basically like a live action take on the teen...

...titans, but much darker than the cartoons and it's very interesting series. But can we talk about how often these guys don't fight crime in their costumes? Like it feels like they only ever bust out the costumes when they're in their flashbacks. But like there was an episode where they go after death strokes man winter green and they kick in the front door of this guy's house in street clothes. I might wait, like, in this day and age, you're just going to not even bother to mask your face. You're just going to bust into this guy's house. Okay, and wait, what was any of them going to do? Because none of them were armed, except for maybe Donna, has the last so of truth, but other than that, like there wasn't a whole lot going on in the weapons department. So that was interesting to me. It's going to be very interesting because I think we're getting to the point where Dick is going to finally adopt the nightwing persona. He's kind of renounced Robin and so that, I think, is one thing is we now no longer have to Robbins. We've got Dick as burned his costume, you know, and at this point it just leaves Jason Todd as the only Robin. But the show has been very interesting. It's been definitely different from what I've experienced with the CW shows. For sure, I don't necessarily love it, but it's been interesting to kind of see the characters develop and all of that. And Yeah, so that's been that's been fun. All right, we are going to go ahead and head to our last break and then when we come back we are going to talk about this week's question in the week, which is not from bod decks, but stay tuned. All right, and we are back. Thanks again so much for tuning in this week. So this week's question is what is your ideal birthday? And I...

...mean I was one of those things. I was thinking about it, like what would be kind of the thing that you think of when you think birthday? Kind of getting together, that sort of thing, like, because we really, I mean this year we have really had that and so you know, and like I said, this this year in particular, I mean my wife and I celebrated, but just the two of US between our birthdays, but we wound up actually going down to Eugene to drop off something on my birthday, and I'm totally fine with that. I didn't really have any big plans or thoughts like that, but I think for me, like just getting a bunch of people together, having a barbecue something like that, I think is usually a good thing for a birthday. I do enjoy the occasional getting to go and I don't know, like go bowling or something like. I haven't done anything like that in years. But I think if we ever get out of this whole covid thing, that might be something to do. Just get together a bunch of people and go to big OWL's or to Langer's entertainment center in Sherwood and just have a birthday like that, like act like I'm a ten year old again, like, I don't know, I think that would be something that would be fun to do. Ultimately, I just getting to spend time with other people. I think is probably the best thing that I have for doing a birthday, although I will say probably the best birthday that I can remember would be the birthday that my wife threw for my thirty birthday party, as I am creeping up on forty, where basically she did a scavenger hunt where she basically had my friend Michael Come over and basically kidnap me while she was getting everything ready for a surprise birthday party. But it had me finding clues. Was all over town like Mike, when I wind up going back to my old high school and sitting and talking with Mr Westerberg for a while and then he gave us the next clue and then we went on to get Dutch brothers and got coffee and that came with a clue and basically went to rainy day games. Bunch of the guys were hanging around. We played, Gosh, what do we play? Memoir forty four, which...

...was a World War II strategy game. That was a lot of fun just getting to do that and then when by the time we got back to the house, there was a bunch of people there waiting to say surprise. And Yeah, so we that was that was, I think, my favorite birthday that I've done. And Yeah, but overall, I think just being around other people. I think is probably the biggest thing for me, is getting to spend time with them. So that is our show for this week. Hope you guys have a great week ahead of you. Next week is going to be a little interesting because I am going to be a heading out of town and so I'm going to have the episode ready to go and get you on Monday and then, yeah, we'll see how things go for the following week. So hope you have a great day, whatever you do, and take care and remember parenting is a complicated profession. Stay safe out there.
